Buckethead is one of the more bizarre and enigmatic figures to be found in American underground and experimental music. He is a virtuoso on the electric guitar, True to his name, Buckethead (born Brian Carroll) wears an inverted KFC bucket on his head along with a full-face white mask. He produces elaborate stage shows, innovative musicianship, rapid-fire riffing, near-robotic fretwork and idiosyncratic ramblings that combine elements of Yngwie Malmsteen, Adrian Belew, avant-improv artist John Zorn and more.

Formed in Oakland, CA in late 1985, Neurosis developed a style blending industrial, heavy metal, and alternative rock with often spiritually focused lyrics. Members Steve Von Till (guitar, vocals, percussion), Dave Edwardson (bass, vocals), Scott Kelly (bass, vocals), Jason Roeder (drums), Noah Landis (keyboards, samples, tape effects), and Pete Inc. (visuals) debuted in 1987 with the album 'Pain of Mind.'

The Beat (known in North America as The English Beat and Australia as The British Beat) has been on the music scene since 1979. The group fuses soul, reggae, ska, pop and punk into a unique and danceable sound that made them one of the most popular and influential bands of the British Ska movement. Dave Wakeling, who lives around Los Angeles, fronts the U.S. version of the band; Ranking Roger, the English version, yet both tour frequently worldwide.

Murder by Death, which was formed in 2000 in Bloomington, Indiana (and was initially known as Little Joe Gould), plays a variety of music including instrumentals, rock and alternative country. The group is also known for using an electric cello, which adds a gothic sound.

Kamasi Washington is a tenor sax player who rose out of the L.A. music scene. He's a member of a loosely connected population of jazz musicians sometimes called the West Coast Get-Down. His playing can be heard on Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album "To Pimp a Butterfly."
