Wilkeson's Annual Handcar Races

Community Event, Parade

This year, Wilkeson’s Booster Club is building up the town's annual event for the parade, tug-o-war and handcar races by sending an early call for entries, teams and vendors. The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 21st. Wilkeson, a historic coal mining town, is located in northern Pierce County just five miles from Buckley on SR165. With 43 years of racing, the Booster Club is optimistic for a big turnout. “We hope to increase the fun for public participating in this unique event. It’s our region’s legacy and very few handcar races exist in the United States today” said Amy Barber, Booster President. This year’s event opens with an old fashion downtown parade at 11 a.m. The parade is free to enter with first place trophies in nine categories. Youth are encouraged to join in with participation ribbons for all. The day continues with an all-day vendor’s market, music by ‘The W Lovers”, delicious food, free children’s activities, a tug-o-war contest and traditional handcar races. The Eagles Club sponsors the event beer garden and will hosts an evening dance. New this year will be the Handcar Race fees of only $5.00 per person, per entry. Handcar teams are 3 or 5 persons who compete against the time clock at Wilkeson’s historic Coke Oven Park. Sign up for races starts at 12:30 p. m. A Tug-o-War contest is held near the close of the handcar races. Businesses are encouraged to enter a six man team to win the coveted traveling Tug-o-War trophy. In addition to the parade and contests, vendor spaces are still available. Parade entry forms, vendor or race forms can be requested by emailing Clubs, businesses, families and friends are welcome to enter the contests. Racing or not, locals and visitors are invited to come and enjoy the day in a historic town!
